Over three feet of snow falls in Watertown this weekend

Data from the National Weather Service in Buffalo at around 1 p.m. Sunday showed that 46 inches of snow was dumped on Copenhagen, the highest reported total by the Buffalo weather service at press time Sunday..

As of 1 p.m. Sunday, Watertown was at 37.6 inches.

On Sunday afternoon, the forecast for Watertown said new snow accumulations of around 12-18 inches were possible during the day Sunday. Snow was expected to continue Sunday night, but at a much slower clip with new snow accumulations of two-to-four inches possible.

Director of Jefferson County Office of Fire and Emergency Services Joseph D. Plummer said in a text message Sunday afternoon that there haven’t been any major incidents because of the storm in the county.

“We really have been holding our own,” he wrote. “Just simply great work by dispatch, law enforcement, plow operators and fire/EMS service.”

The snow forced some traditional Thanksgiving-weekend events, such as Watertown First’s Shop Local Saturday Market for Small Business Saturday, to postpone. That event is now scheduled to take place on Dec. 8.

In Lewis County, Lowville saw 24 inches of snow while Harrisville got 18 inches.

The clouds and snow were anticipated to clear on Monday with a high near 32 and mostly sunny skies in Watertown, according to the National Weather Service.

A lake effect snow warning continues for Oswego, Jefferson and Lewis counties until 7 p.m. Monday while southeastern and southwestern St. Lawrence County’s expires at 1 a.m. Monday.

Up to three inches of snow north of Gouverneur to the Degrasse line is expected while between three and 12 inches are expected south of that line.
