Red Storm track fall in home opener

SARANAC LAKE — The Saranac Lake track and field teams kicked off the season at home Thursday afternoon. The meet, however, ended on a bit of a sour note as both the boys and girls squads were swept by the Peru Nighthawks.

Despite winning seven individual events, the Red Storm boys were defeated 95-37. Saranac Lake’s girls, which claimed three events, suffered a 92.5-39.5 loss.

The Red Storm’s boys head coach Cy Ellsworth said the results look a little lopsided than they are, but the boys team had opportunities to score a few more points in a few events.

“We are really pleased with our performances in our first meet with very few opportunities to train in good weather conditions,” he said. “We will be a different team at the end of May and into June.”

Liam Nobles, a senior, highlighted the Red Storm’s effort by winning four individual events — the 110-meter hurdles, the 200-meter dash, the triple jump and the long jump.

Fellow senior Jake Kollmer, one of the top distance runners in Section VII, won the 1,600 and the 800-meter race. Meanwhile, sophomore Sam Duprey took home the shot put event.

The Nighthawks boys won all three relay race, and swept Saranac Lake in the high jump, 400 hurdles, 400 and 100.

On the girls side, three different Red Storm athletes won their respective events. Sophomore Jovie Schenk won the 100-meter dash, while Ally Bourgeois, a junior, was victorious in the 200 and Gracen Foster, also a junior, had the furthest throw in the shot put.

“Ally Bourgeois had a nice night taking a first and two seconds, Jovie Schenk took a first and a second, Gracen Foster took a first, Maggie Reynolds, Anika wamsganz and Canence Kennedy each took seconds and all three were just behind the first place finisher,” Sarana Lake’s girls head coach Jason Wamsganz said. “Maggie Reed, Addi Ash, Rai Baumann and Layne Locke had really nice performances. Lena Holmes and Maggie Reynolds scored their first varsity points. Our distance group is much improved from last year, they are going to do some nice things for their team this year.”

Coach Wamsganz said the girls squad is relatively young, and he was extremely excited about how they competed and performed on Thursday.

“We scored some second-place finishes but were just behind the winner,” he said. “These close races will give us confidence moving forward and we will definitely learn from these races and it will help us down the stretch. We got the jitters out and for many of the girls, they now have one varsity meet under their belt.”

Lauren Davey and Reese Duprey paced the Nighthawks girls with four individual event wins. The duo was a part of both the 400 and 1,600-meter relay. Davey also won the 100 and 400-meter hurdles, while Duprey claimed the long and triple jumps.

Teammates Meredith and Maddy Welc combined for five individual event victories.

Following a two-week spring break, Red Storm will compete next at Picketts Corners on Tuesday, April 29, against the Saranac Central Spartans. The team’s next home meet will be at 4:30 p.m. on May 6 against the Plattsburgh Hornets.
