SLP boys skate to victory over ’Jacks
LAKE PLACID — A season ago, the Tupper Lake boys hockey team swept Saranac Lake Placid in three straight games. But this year, SLP got its revenge.
The SLP boys completed the three-game season sweep over the Lumberjacks with a 8-1 rout during Friday’s Lake Placid Winter Carnival tournament game at the Olympic Center’s 1932 Jack Shea Arena.
SLP head coach Josh Spanburgh said sweeping Tupper Lake was a goal of his team’s heading into the season.
“We needed to redeem what happened last year,” he said. “They took it to us and took three from us. This year, we went out and took three from them while playing some pretty good hockey.”
SLP had 10 different player record a point as Ayden McCormick led the way with a hat trick, which pushed his season total to 22 goals, breaking the SLP single-season goal record that he set last year with 19. McCormick also scored in the SLP’s 6-3 loss to to Aquinas Institute in the second game of tournament on Saturday, and now has 23 goals.
“Honestly right now, his shot is deadly,” Spanburgh said. “Not just his shot, but his ability to get positionally in a good spot to take that shot. Something that you don’t (see) a lot with kids at this level doing, he’s able to have the puck and find himself in position to not only score, but to score because he’s got himself in a good shooting position as he’s entering with the puck or finding the puck.”
Braydon Harvey had two goals and an assist, while Ryan Bruce, Carver Ball and Will Landriault also scored for SLP, who had four of its last five prior to Friday’s game.
SLP’s Ethan Knight added three assists in the win as Bruce, Evan Harvey, Owen Lawrence, Carson St. Louis, Ryan Bartholomew and David Montroy each had one. Cassidy Goodman had 18 saves in the win, which Spanburgh said everyone chipped in.
“Cassidy did a good job holding the fort down in the net,” he said. “It’s nice to see Carver Bell get a goal, it’s nice to see Ryan Bruce get another goal and even David Montroy with his first points of his career on an assist on Carver’s goal. I’m really proud of the overall game.”
On the other side, Gavin Mitchell scored the lone goal for the Lumberjacks, who dropped to 0-13-1 overall. Braydon Shannon recorded 25 saves in net.
Neither squad really got off a hot start, and looked sloppy. The big reason for the slow start: Wet ice. It’s the first time either squad has played at the 1932 arena all season.
“The guys couldn’t seem to get their blades off the ice, they were sticking,” Spanburgh said. “I mean everyone looked a little slow, the puck looked a little slow. I’m not going to worry too much about the first period, I still thought the effort was there, they just dealt with some adversity.”
SLP eventually got the first goal when Bruce stole the puck in the neutral zone and fired a shot above Shannon’s blocker side.
However, Mitchell evened thing up when he got behind the SLP defense and beat Goodman over the left shoulder with 4:45 remaining in the first period.
SLP scored within the first 30 seconds of the second period when Knight made a cross ice pass to Braydon Harvey, who quickly found the back of the net. SLP then connected on four straight goals — three from McCormick and one from Landriault to close out the middle period.
Bell and Braydon Harvey each tallied a goal in the third period to close out the contest.
“After having a lead, (we had) a very good third period where everyone did their jobs and didn’t look at the scoreboard, didn’t care about that, just went out there and said ‘I’ve got to play hard and do my job,'” Spanburgh said. “Everyone that got out there did a great job of just doing their job and not letting the score or anything else dictate how they performed.”
SLP is now 5-4 all-time against Tupper Lake since Saranac Lake and Lake Placid merged in 2019. Earlier this season, the squad beat the Lumberjacks 8-5 on Jan. 2 at the Tupper Lake Civic Center and secured an 8-1 victory over them on Dec. 14 at the Saranac Lake Civic Center.
In the second game of the tournament, the SLP boys fell 6-3 to Aquinas Institute on Saturday. McCormick had one goal and two assists and St. Louis added a goal and two assists. Bartholomew also scored for SLP, while Mackaid Nicholas chipped in with an assist.
Goodman had 28 saves in net for SLP, which dropped to 5-7-1 overall. Aquinas Institute’s Reagan Gray had 17 saves.
Tupper Lake, which was not originally supposed to play in this tournament but filled in after a team dropped out, did not play on Saturday.
Up next, SLP will take on Northeastern Clinton at 6 p.m. on Tuesday at the Rouses Point Civic Center. Meanwhile, the Lumberjacks will host Salmon River at 5 p.m. on Wednesday.
