LAKE PLACID — For the first time since 2019, the FIS Freestyle Aerials World Cup returned to this village, and despite solid performance from the U.S., it wads the Chinese team that dominated the event.

The Chinese aerials squad recorded individual wins in the men’s and women’s field on Saturday, before capping off the weekend with a team win on Sunday.

China’s Sun Jiaxu placed first in the men’s event, while Switzerland’s Noe Roth was second and China’s Li Xinpeng was third.

On the women’s side, China’s Xu Mengtao led the way, followed by Australia’s Danielle Scott in second and Canada’s Marion Thenault in third.

Team USA’s Karena Elliott had the best individual finish for the U.S., placing sixth overall in the women’s event. During the super final Elliott attempted a back full double full, with the highest difficulty score from the women. While she executed her jump in the air, she slightly overrotated on the landing, which forced her to lean back, putting her in sixth.

“The crowd was awesome out here. A hometown crowd is incredible so I had to put down a big jump that’s the highest degree of difficulty that I have, so I just really had to go for it,” Elliott said in a statement. “Unfortunately, it didn’t work out for me tonight but we’ll try again!”

Kyra Dossa popped into the top 10, finishing ninth. Dossa and Elliott were the only U.S. women to advance past the qualification round. Elliott was the lone U.S. athlete to advance to super finals between men and women.

On the men’s side, three U.S. athletes cracked the top-10 with Quinn Dehlinger leading the way in seventh, while Chris Lillis was ninth and Justin Schoenefeld 10th.

The day began with women’s qualifications, and competitors battled inconsistent winds and overcast weather. Many women changed their jumps throughout the first round and adjusted their start positions at the last minute, with mixed success. Despite this, Elliott led the way for the U.S. women, qualifying in third, along with Dossa in seventh.

Dani Loeb narrowly missed out on finals, finishing 13th overall, followed by Winter Vinecki in 14th, Kaila Kuhn in 15th, Amelia Glogowski in 18th, Tasia Tanner in 23rd and Cate McEneany in 27th.

The snow began to fall as the men started their training jumps before qualifying. The wind and snow continued to have an impact; however, the leading U.S. men remained unfazed. Schoenefeld took the top U.S. spot and tied with Li Xinpeng from China with the best score in qualification. Dehlinger was right behind, qualifying third, followed by Lillis in ninth.

Ian Schoenwald had a solid performance but missed out on finals, finishing 17th, followed by Ashton Salwan in 18th, Derek Krueger in 20th. Brady Flynn made his World Cup debut at only 16 years old, finishing the day 31st.

In the mixed aerials team event, the Chinese squad of Mengtao, Xinpeng and Jiaxu placed first. The second Canadian team of Alexandra Montminy, Miha Fontaine and Alexandre Duchaine placed second and the Australian team of Abbey Wilcox, Laura Peel and Reilly Flanagan was third.

The second U.S. team of Kuhn, Schoenefeld and Schoenwald placed sixth, edging out the top U.S. team of Elliott, Dehlinger and Lillis, which placed seventh.
