Bomber boys earn second straight win
LAKE PLACID — After a tough start to open the season, the Lake Placid boys basketball team has started to find a bit of a groove. On Wednesday, the host Blue Bombers secured its second straight victory, topping the Willsboro Wolves 62-28.
Seb Cecunjanin, who is now 77 career points away from 1,000, scored a game-high 20 points for the Blue Bombers, while also recording 10 rebounds and seven steals to help the team improve to 2-10 overall. Lake Placid previously topped Indian Lake/Long Lake 61-36 this past Friday.
“It’s two games in a row that we’ve put some points on the board and looked good,” Lake Placid head coach Brian Brandes said. “We’d like that to continue, if we can.”
Owen Hayes added a season-high 11 points for the Blue Bombers on Wednesday, while Caleb Wylie and Kenny Lawrence scored nine apiece. Phoenix Colby had 10 rebounds.
“Owen Hayes had a nice game,” Brandes said. “He started driving and hit a couple 3’s. Caleb Wylie continued a hot streak and had three 3’s.”
Seven different Blue Bombers recorded a basket on Wednesday, but the team didn’t come out hot like it did in its previous outing, according to Brandes.
“It’s nice to see that we scored some points because I didn’t particularly think we were on fire,” he said. “We missed a lot. Our percentage of 3’s was not very good, but they were persistent.”
Lake Placid recorded 18 steals total, which helped the team jump out to a 19-7 lead in the first quarter. The pesky Blue Bomber defense was strong again in the second quarter, as the team extended its lead to 33-12 at halftime.
After the intermission, Lake Placid had its best offensive outing, scoring 20 points. However, in the fourth quarter, Willsboro outscored them 11-9.
Cole Gay led the Wolves with 12 points, while Kiran Evans added seven and Connor Crowningshield had four.
Up next, the Blue Bombers will take on the Seton Catholic Knights at 6:30 p.m. today on the road. The team will return to its home court on at 6:30 p.m. on Monday against the Wells Wildcats.
