SLP girls split Sara Placid tourney
SARANAC LAKE — The Saranac Lake Placid girls hockey team split two games in its annual Sara Placid Tournament this past weekend at the Saranac Lake Civic Center.
SLP kicked off the tournament on Friday with a 3-1 victory over the Northern Rhode Island Yeti. But suffered an 8-2 loss Saturday to the Beekmantown Eagles, who soared to the championship. The Canton Golden Bears placed third in the tournament following a 5-2 victory over the Yeti on Saturday.
On Friday, SLP got off to a great start by surging to a 2-0 lead in the first period on goals from eighth-grader Marissa Reardon and freshman Kendra Levitt. The opening goal was Reardon’s first of her young career.
Northern Rhode Island responded with a tally in the second period, however, junior Stephanie Kilbourne-Hill found the back of the net to secure SLP’s third victory this season.
Senior Kelsey McKillip earned the win in net.

Beekmantown 8, SLP 2

Beekmantown connected on three straight goals in the championship match on Saturday, and essentially shut down SLP’s chances of earning the title.
Amaya Abellard paced the Eagles with two goals and two assists. Eleanna Fullum had two goals for Beekmantown while Kylee Surprenant, Meegan Burdo, Ava Perry and Katie McCormick each scored one goal.
Adyson Campbell had two assists, while McCormick, Rhianna Gilligan, Reese Peryer, Marin Juneau and Sophia Amaya-Gutierrez had one assist each.
SLP’s Addison Colby, a freshman, and Whitney Warner, a senior, each scored one goal, while Levitt added an assist.
Despite generating some chances early, SLP finally broke through on the scoreboard in the second period when Colby netted an unassisted goal. However, Burdo responded a few seconds later to make the score 4-1.
SLP again cut the deficit when Warner scored a power play goal on a pass from Levitt. But the Eagles dash all hopes by scoring four consecutive goals to earn the title.
Kori-Lynne Lamoy recorded 17 saves in net, while McKillip had 17 for SLP before being relived by Allison LaHart in the third periord. LaHart stopped all three shots she faced.
SLP, which dropped to 3-5 overall, will host Alexandria Bay at 5:30 p.m. on Friday at the Saranac Lake Civic Center. Following that contest, the team will then host Adirondack United at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 7 at the Olympic Center’s 1932 Jack Shea Arena.
