LAKE PLACID — The Lake Placid boys and the Saranac Lake girls Nordic ski teams narrowly earned team victories in the first races of the season at Mount Van Hoevenberg on Thursday.

Both the races were decided by a single point as the Blue Bomber boys edged out Saranac Lake 10-11, while the Red Storm girls won by an identical 10-11 score over Lake Placid’s girls.

In a tight boys race, the Blue Bomber’s Aidan Fay skied past Saranac Lake’s Mason Stoddard by less than a second to secure the victory. Fay and Stoddard both clocked in times of 8 minutes, 13 seconds. Fay’s teammate, Colin Francis, placed third in the race in 8:20. Keene did not have a boys finisher.

Tyler Burth was the overall winner in the girls race, finishing in 9:10 to lead Saranac Lake. She was followed by Lake Placid’s Maya Garrison (9:21) in second and teammate Cadence Kennedy (9:30) in third. Zarela Gulli was Keene’s top finisher, placing ninth in 11:08.

“The Section VII Nordic teams are thrilled to be racing in December, thanks to Mother Nature, it’s been a few years since our last December race,” Saranac Lake Nordic coach Keith Kogut said in a statement. “We are grateful to the staff of Mount Van Hovenberg for all their work getting the trails ready for today’s race. It looks like we will have some great competition in Section VII Nordic racing this year.”
