LAKE PLACID — Two area boxers who compete and train for ADK Boxing and Fitness won their respective fights on Saturday, Nov. 16 at the Arbor Hill Community Center in Albany.

Aaron Hesseltine, of Saranac Lake, defeated Clifton Park fighter Samuel Whiting in the 165 pounds weight class, while Marcus Marti, of Lake Placid, topped Albany boxer Richard Race in the 203 pounds super heavyweight class.

Ryan Gallagher, of Saranac Lake, who was supposed to compete this past weekend, did not fight because his opponent was sick.

In Hesseltine’s match, his opponent ended up being a few inches taller than him, but since he frequently sparred with taller opponents, he was prepared for the fight. Hesseltine was able to land several scoring jabs, crosses and lead hooks in the first two rounds.

In the second, Hesseltine stayed on the front foot and stayed the aggressor, driving Whiting to the corner where he continued to land blows to Whiting’s head.

Whiting was given two standing-eight counts near the end of the second round after taking repeated unanswered blows to his head, and was bleeding from the nose and mouth. Whiting came out stronger in the third round and landed more scoring punches.

However, Hesseltine responded with more jabs and crosses, and ended up having his hand raised as the winner of the bout.

Marti was the last fight of the day and he and his opponent were at similar height and weight, and neither with any competition experience. Race was the aggressor in the first round, landing several scoring blows, before Marti fought back towards the end of the round.

Marti was more active in the second round, and began to control the fight staying on his front foot. After a flurry of punches, Marti landed a solid jab which caught Race coming in. Race fought back, but eventually was put on the ropes again.

In the third round, both fighters were fatigued and alternated control of the fight until the end when Marti landed a flurry of punches before the bell.

Starting at $4.75/week.
