Adirondack Winter invitational returns
LAKE PLACID — The second annual Adirondack Winter Invitational men’s hockey tournament will take place here on Friday and Saturday at the Olympic Center. The tournament will showcase four teams from two premier NCAA Division I men’s hockey conferences.
Those teams include ECAC Hockey teams the St. Lawrence University Saints and Clarkson University Golden Knights, as well as the University of Massachusetts Lowell River Hawks and Providence College Friars of the Hockey East Conference.
The teams will play two games over Thanksgiving Weekend for a shot at the Adirondack Winter Invitational trophy. All games will be held at the 1980 Herb Brooks Arena and the tournament winner will be determined through an overall points system.
UMass Lowell will take on St. Lawrence at 4 p.m. in the first game on Friday and Providence vs. Clarkson will start at 7:30 p.m. The following day, Providence will face off against St. Lawrence at 4 p.m., and UMass Lowell will take on Clarkson at 7:30 p.m.
As of Monday, the Friars ranked 10th in the nation in the USA TODAY/USA Hockey Magazine Men’s College Hockey Poll. The team, which is coached by Nate Leaman, is currently 8-3-2. They are led by forwards Tanner Adams and Logan Will, who have 10 points each.
UMass Lowell, which is coached by Norm Bazin, is ranked 16th in the country with a 9-3 record. Scout Truman and Ben Meehan led the River Hawks with 10 points each.
The Golden Knights is currently ranked 19th and hold a 9-4-1 record in their first year under head coach Jean-Francois Houle. Trey Taylor is the team’s highest scorer with 10 points.
St. Lawrence is the only non-ranked team in this weekend’s tournament. The Saints are currently 4-9 overall under long-time head coach Brent Brekke. St. Lawrence is led by senior Greg Lapointe, who paces the squad with 13 points and seven goals.
During the inaugural Adirondack Invitational in 2023, Arizona State skated away with the title after edging Cornell in a shootout in the championship game. Clarkson finished third after beating UMass Amherst 5-4 in overtime in the consolation final.
