Red Storm girls soccer fall to Chazy
SARANAC LAKE — The Saranac Lake girls soccer team suffered a 3-0 loss to the Chazy Eagles on the road this past Friday.
After a scoreless first half, the Eagles netted three goals after intermission to seal the victory. Chazy’s Aubrey Bechard, Marin Juneau and Gwyn Compeau each scored one goal.
Saranac Lake, which was was plagued by injuries, were solid defensively, but were unable to muster up some scoring chances. The team was outshot 16-7.
“We were without a few players due to injuries and so we were moving the girls around a little bit,” Red Storm head coach Jason Wamsganz said. “Brook Burke was tripped about 10 minutes in and had to leave the game. Our other two sweepers were both out for the game and so we really had to pull people out of position at this point. These girls played their hearts out. It remained 0-0 at the half and our girls were hanging in there.”
Bechard broke through early in the second half to give Chazy a 1-0 lead. The Eagles then followed the effort up with a goal from Juneau and Compeau.
“The second half saw us go down by one on a misfortunate play,” Wamsganz said. “The ball took a bad bounce, and we couldn’t recover from it allowing Chazy the lead. We turned the ball over in our own end after a few opportunities to get it out, and they made us pay by scoring their second goal. Their third was with about three minutes to go and they had a nice shot to a corner.”
The Red Storm’s Emma Akey had 13 saves in net, while the Eagles’ Calleigh Clark recorded the shutout with six saves.
Despite falling, Wamsganz said he was proud of how his team battled.
“Heads didn’t drop. We looked forward and just helped cover for each other. That’s what teams do,” he said. “Ellie Willett did a great job being thrown in as sweeper, and I know that if we need her there, she will just continue to get more comfortable. Tyler Burth, once again was all over the field. She is playing really well right now. Our defense should be very proud of their efforts.”
The Red Storm, which fell to 4-3 overall, were slated to host Lake Placid on Tuesday, before hosting Northern Adirondack at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday.
