Moriah edges out Storm girls soccer
SARANAC LAKE — The Saranac Lake girls soccer team suffered a 2-1 loss to the state ranked and undefeated Moriah Vikings on Friday at Schroeter’s Field. Saranac Lake head coach Jason Wamsganz said he was proud of his team’s effort.
“They played their hearts out. That is a really solid Moriah team that beat us in Moriah 9-2 three weeks ago,” he said. “For us to not have our full team healthy and to play the way we did, I am pleased with our effort.”
Moriah’s Alexis Mascarenas and Amelia Kazlo each scored one goal on a night when the Vikings out shot Saranac Lake 24-7. Mascarenas netted an unassisted goal around 19 minutes into the game, while Kazlo burried her unassisted goal in the second half.
“Both of their goals were a bit of misfortune,” Wamsganz said. “Our defenders were in good position on one of their goals, but unfortunately as the ball came in, we stepped on the ball and fell down, leaving them a point blank chance from about five yards out. The second was a bounce off from us into our own net. I’ve said it before, the ball bounces your way sometimes and not other times.”
The Red Storm’s Tyler Burth buried her team’s lone goal on an assist from Mar Carmona Guarido. Burth’s goal was scored with around 5 minutes left in the contest to spoil the Vikings shutout.
“We had a 5 minute run where we were putting pressure on them and she was able to get one by their goalie,” Wamsganz said. “(It was) a really nice goal, she was being typical Tyler, relentless, she wasn’t going to be denied.”
Saranac Lake’s goalkeeper Emma Akey had a stand out performance with 22 saves, while Moriah’s Madelyn Eichen had five.
“Emma stood on her head today,” Wamsganz said. “She played really well. I feel like she is locked in right now, we just have to have her best down the stretch if we are not fully healthy. She knows that, and really did a great job today.”
The Red Storm girls, which dropped to 6-4-1 overall, will take on Boquet Valley at 4 p.m. today at Camp Dudley in Westport.
