Lake Placid native wins ski jumping title

LAKE PLACID — Lake Placid native and New York Ski Educational Foundation athlete Tate Frantz won two U.S. Ski Jumping National Championship titles this past weekend in both the small hill and large hill competitions during the Flaming Leaves Festival at the Olympic Jumping Complex.

Frantz opened up the weekend on Saturday, with a one-jump score of 143.3 in the HS100 event. His efforts were good enough to edge out Erik Belshaw (141.8) by a thin margin. Decker Dean finished right behind in third place with 141.3 points.

On Sunday, Frantz secured his second title with a pair of strong jumps in the HS128 event. Casey Larson placed second while Andrew Urlaub rounded out the podium in third place.

In the women’s jumping event, Annika Belshaw claimed the U.S. National Championship for the fourth year in a row in the HS100 event on Saturday. Josie Johnson secured second place, with Sam Macuga rounding out the podium in third place.

Belshaw soared to victory once more in the HS128, making her an eight-time U.S. National Champion. Paige Jones earned her spot on the podium for this event, coming in second place with Josie Johnson finishing in third.

Nordic combined

Niklas Malacinski won the men’s Nordic combined event after posting a one jump score of 129.5 and 10K time of 23:49.1. Benjamin Loomis had the best jump score with 138, but finished second following a cross-country time of 24:25.6. Stephen Schumann placed third following a jumping score of 100 points and a time of 22:57.4.

NYSEF’s Max Fey was 11th overall with a 43 jumping score and a time of 27:51.1; Duncan Van Dorn was 12th with a score of 40.5 and a time of 29:08.2 and Jack Kroll was 15th with a score of 65 and a time of 34:38.5.

Alex Brabec won the women’s Nordic combined event with one jump score of 83, followed by the fastest 5-kilometer cross-country ski in 12:40.2. Ella Wilson, who posted the best one jump score of 88 points, was second with a Nordic time of 14:30.8. She was followed by Haley Brabec with a 38 points and a time of 14:08.2.

HS10 U10

In the youth jumping competitions, NYSEF’s Adalina Weibrecht won the girls event with a score of 56. June “Bee” Politi and NYSEF’s Isabella Szczech tied for second with 37.

On the boys side, Wyeth Taylor won with a score of 49.5, followed by NYSEF’s Lucas Montag (48.5) and NYSEF’s Frank Politi (42.5).

K48 U16

In the boys U16 jumping event, Galen McCusker of the Lebanon Outing Club won with a two-jump score of 158.2. He was followed by Ford Sayre teammates Boyd Schaefer (157.2) and Dylan Cote (116.0).

On the girls side, Caroline Chor, of Ford Sayre, earned first place with a score of 178.6. Islay Sheil was second with 119 and Ford Sayre’s Celia Osbourne (75.9) was third.
