Saranac Lake girls soccer improves to 3-1
SARANAC LAKE — The Saranac Lake girls soccer team turned in another solid performance on the way to a 2-1 victory in a home match Tuesday against the Ticonderoga Sentinels.
The Red Storm netted a goal in each half to improve to 3-1 overall. Ally Bourgeois and Mar Carmona Gaurido scored for Saranac Lake while Anika Wamsganz recorded an assist on both goals.
Saranac Lake seemingly dominated the contest, outshooting Ticonderoga 10-3. The team also got off to a quick start when Bourgeios scored less than 10 minutes into the game on an assist from Wamsganz.
“We came out with a great deal of intensity and found open players and made the easy play,” Red Storm head coach Jason Wamsganz said. “Our defense was aggressive and we played the ball on the ground. Coach Kelly Burth has really been doing a great job with the defense and the girls are soaking up what she is teaching in practice and really executing it in games.”
The Sentinels’ Avery Lender buried the equalizer around 13 minutes into the second half.
“We got a little out of position from a personnel standpoint,” coach Wamsganz said. “Players (were) playing different positions and we made a few mistakes on our marks and played the ball in the air for about 10 minutes resulting in a Ticonderoga goal in the second half.”
With the game tied, the Red Storm reclaimed the lead for good when Carmona Gaurido netted a goal less than seven minutes later.
Saranac Lake’s Emma Akey recorded two saves en route to the victory, while two Ticonderoga goalies combined for eight stops.
“Emma played well and did a great job helping to direct traffic and talk to her defense all game,” coach Wamsganz said. “Tyler Burth was all over the field. She is a relentless player and never gives up on a play. Zu Oliveras and Ellie Willett were great on the wings and every one of our defenders were outstanding tonight. It really was a total team effort.”
The Red Storm will hit the road at 6:30 p.m. today for a match up against the Moriah Vikings. Moriah is currently 3-0 this season with victories over Lake Placid, Northern Adirondack and Seton Catholic.
