Adirondack Rednecks compete in bocce at State Fall Games
The Adirondack Rednecks competed in bocce at the Special Olympics New York’s State Fall Games in Glens Falls on Saturday, Oct. 21.
The team of Scott Haig, John Charland, Erik Viscardo and Don Moore picked up a silver medal for their efforts. The Red Bears — including teammates Allen Hurteau, Michael Heath, Gary Belrose and Ricky Sullivan — brought home a bronze medal.
The Unified Team of High Rollers came home with gold medals after two close competitions.
Special Olympians Darron Balch and Michael Nephew with Unified Partners Keith Freeman and Jennifer Ivimey earned their Gold medal with scores of 13-11 against a Buffalo team and 12-6 against an Albany team.
Seven sports were played in various locations in Glens Falls — equestrian, cross country, cycling, golf, soccer, softball and bocce.
Special Olympics New York’s mission is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-style sports for all children and adults with intellectual disabilities giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of skills and friendship with their families, Special Olympics athletes and the community.
The local athletes have now switched to bowling with the change of weather. The team trains at Romano’s Lanes in Saranac Lake. Their first competition of the bowling season was on Sunday in Saratoga Springs.
