Red Storm girls draw even with Knights, 1-1
SARANAC LAKE — The Saranac Lake girls soccer team wrapped up its three-game home stand with a 1-1 draw with the Seton Catholic Knights at Schroeter’s Field on Friday.
Saranac Lake finished the week with one win over Boquet Valley, and two draws against Ticonderoga and Seton Catholic.
Red Storm head coach Jason Wamsganz thought his team played really physically the past three games.
“I’m happy for the girls for playing physical and coming away this week with some positives,” he said. “However, I do believe that we could have had a 3-0-0 week. We played down to the levels of other teams at times even though we dominated in possession and shots.”
Nicole Lizarazo opened the game with a rebound goal at two minutes, 38 seconds into the game. The goal was set up when Abby Pearl’s shot bounced in front of the net and couldn’t be cleared by a Red Storm defender.
In the second half, Samra Cirikovic netted the equalizer on a penalty kick, which she buried in the left corner around the nine-minute mark. Cirikovic was rewarded a penalty kick after being tried inside the 18.
Saranac Lake outshot the Knights 28-15, marking the third straight game the Red Storm outshot its opponents.
“We had some good looks all week, but weren’t able to capitalize on all attempts,” Wamsganz said.
Saranac Lake’s sophomore goalie, Emma Akey, had another solid outing, recording eight saves. The Knights’ Lacee LaPoint had nine stops in net.
The Red Storm are currently 3-5-3 on the season. The team will wrap up the regular season with two games this week and one contest next week, starting with a home match against Lake Placid today at 4:30 p.m. Saranac Lake will travel to face Moriah on Thursday and Northern Adirondack on Tuesday.
“Heading into this week, we will focus on finishing, moving through the ball with our body, finding lanes and we will have to try and figure out a wrinkle in trying to defend Amelia Kazlo from Moriah,” Wamsganz said. “(She) had four goals in their 5-1 win against us earlier this season. They are just a fast team and gave us fits earlier this season.
“We finish up with NAC next week,” he added. “We definitely want to rebound against them, they are a good team and beat us pretty handily early in the season, we’ll have our hands full at NAC the last regular divisional game of the season.”
