Local alpine and Nordic skiers take on state meet
The local varsity Nordic ski teams wrapped up the first of two days of New York State Public High School Athletic Association championship action Monday at the Bristol Mountain Ski Resort in Canandaigua.
Lake Placid’s Andrew Scanio, the 2022 NYSPHSAA individual Nordic ski state champion, came up just short of repeating his individual state title on Monday. Scanio placed third overall in the 7.5K classic race in a time of 23 minutes, 6.6 seconds.
Ben Jenkin of Queensbury and Braden Bellizzi of Honeoye Falls were the only two skiers faster than Scanio on Monday. Jenkin won the state title in 22:15.5 while Bellizzi finished in second place in 22:53.9.
Owen Keal was the top Saranac Lake athlete placing fifth in 24:17.6. The Red Storm’s Sam Ash (26:05.7) and Morgan Martin (27:05.0) finished inside the top 20 in 13th and 19th, respectively.
The Lake Placid duo of Colin Francis (27:21.3) and Aidan Fay (27:28.7) finished back-to-back. Francis finished in 22nd while Fay was 23rd.
Saranac Lake was rounded out by Aiden Hesseltine (27:56.7) in 26th, Jake Kollmer (29:02.3) in 34th and Mason Stoddard (30:54.9) in 44th.
On the girls’ side, Adirondack’s Cora Hinsdill was the overall winner in 26:23.7. Clara Avery of Glens Falls took second in 27:49.9 and Emelia Jordan of Brighton was third in 27:53.5.
Saranac Lake’s Tyler Burth was the top local finisher, taking seventh place with a time of 28:32.2. Lake Placid’s top finisher, Maya Garrison, was 10th in 29:30.3.
Following Garrison, were two more Blue Bomber skiers with Holly Erenstone (30:45.9) in 20th and Harley Cohen (31:32.2) in 25th.
Pia Morelli was the lone Keene skier at the state competition. Morelli placed 29th overall out of 48 racers in a time of 31:57.0. Jordanna Samburgh rounded out the Red Storm in 36th place in 33:59.1.
The NYSPHSAA Nordic championships continue Tuesday with the team relay starting at 10 a.m.

Five skiers from Saranac Lake competed at the Bristol Mountain Resort on Monday, completing two runs in the slalom.
Zoe Carpenter had the top finish among local competitors. Carpenter placed 11th overall in the girl’s slalom event in a combined time of 1:43.11. The Red Storm’s Lauryn Caldwell was the only other girl’s skier to finish the race, taking 50th in 2:13.25.
On the boys’ side, Lukas Miemis (1:42.35) was 23rd, followed by Will Miemis (1:54.45) in 39th and Ian Munson (2:15.85) in 48th.
Lake Placid’s Lilly Rother, along with, Saranac Lake’s Evan Hochwald and Averi Woodruff did not finish the competition.
The Alpine events continue today with the giant slalom.
