Fogartys dominate on highest level
SARANAC LAKE — Another race, another record for Peter Fogarty.
Fogarty, who competed for Saranac Lake boys track and field team, earned second place in the 2,000-meter Steeplechase Championship at the National Scholastic Athletics Foundation Outdoor Nationals meet in Euegene, Oregon on Saturday.
Fogarty, who broke multiple school records over his time, placed higher than any other Red Storm track athlete ever had. He recorded a time of 5:58.83.
Matthew Bogdan of Howell, New Jersey recorded a time of 5:49.94, which was the only time faster than Fogarty’s. Both Bogdan and Fogarty broke the Hayward Field track record for the event. The previous record was 5:59.38, which was set in 2018.
“I knew going in that I could hang with the competition,” Fogarty said. “For the majority of the race, I kept myself around fourth or fifth for good positioning and then hammered the last lap to move up to second and squeak under the track record.”
Fogarty was seeded 11th out of 50 competing and was put in the fastest heat.
“Peter just doesn’t give up, and that’s why he is as good as he is,” Saranac Lake Track Coach and Athletic Director Bill Peer said.
Fogarty’s twin brother Andrew competed as well. Andrew recorded a time of 6:22.12, which was good enough to earn him 20th place out of the 45 participants. He was seeded in the top 30 and competed in the second-fastest heat.
“Nationals was a blast from start to finish and it was even better with my brother competing with me,” Peter said.
The Fogartys are accustomed to the spotlight as they had also been a part of the Saranac Lake cross country team that won state titles in 2018 and 2019.
The race marked the end of the Fogartys’ high school track and field careers. Peter will continue to run for Iona College, and Andrew will take a gap year from college and go to Chile for Alpine skiing with the NYSEF program.
“It was an awesome way to end my high school running career. I’m so grateful for the people around me who helped me along the way,” Peter said.
