Captain Marney’s in search of dock space

To the editor:

Captain Marney’s Boat Rental in Lake Placid is looking for a dock space with five or six boat slips on Lake Placid. Paradox Bay Landing, soon to be under new ownership, will not be renewing our lease after 40 years of doing business.

If you have (or had) a camp on Lake Placid, you know that Captain Marney’s was always available to give a helping hand. Local contractors, camp employees and area residents used our boats at highly discounted rates for work and fun. Donations of hourly boat rentals were given to many local charities for their fundraising events. It has always been about being a good neighbor and we hope to be able to continue these services.

Our community is known for outdoor recreation, and tourism is vital for the community’s survival. The boating sector of the tourism industry will be severely affected. We cannot imagine the confusion of more boats being launched to accommodate tourists at the two available public launches. It is hard enough now to launch a boat at those sites and we do not want to create even more chaos.

We have resigned ourselves to the fact that we will not be at Paradox Bay Landing, and it is bittersweet after so many years. However, we are looking forward to a positive change and working with a reasonable landowner, either public or private. Please contact us at captmarneysboatrentals@gmail.com.

Sincerely,

Gary Bishop
