Is this what you voted for?
To the editor:
Exit polling conducted by NBC found that white Evangelical Christians voted for President Trump by a margin of 82% to 17%. All other voters combined voted for candidate Harris 58% to 40%. Astonishing.
I am a Christian, and the Jesus I know and try to emulate embodies love, mercy, justice, truthfulness and forgiveness. He warns against seeking vengeance against enemies, real or imagined. Jesus repeatedly went out of his way to minister to the marginalized and vulnerable people in his world.
In contrast, President Trump and his administration ended lifesaving medical aid to some of the most impoverished places in the world. Children will die as a result. The Justice Department and FBI are tasked with pursuing his political opponents, and employees in the FBI and Justice Department who just did their job. In “Trump World,” truth exists in the realm of alternate facts and convenience, whatever one chooses to believe. Massive cuts in assistance to the poorest Americans are planned, to pay for tax cuts for the wealthiest.
Long existing regulations that have protected us from unsafe food, dangerous work places, water and air pollution, consumer fraud, and financial abuse and scams are falling by the wayside, at the behest of corporations concerned only with profits.
Threats to free speech, freedom from religion, freedom of the press, and to the rule of law are a whole other story.
I ask the 82% of white Evangelicals if this is what you intended when you voted for President Trump? If it isn’t, he is your president. He owes his office to you, and you have more power than any other group to affect his policies.
