O, Canada
To the editor:
Dear Canadians,
Having spent most of my adult life in the Adirondacks of Northern New York, I can’t begin to tell you how embarrassed, angry and ashamed I am in regard to the recent disgusting and despicable treatment by the Trump administration towards the Canadian government and its people. Canada, along with Mexico and its people, are two of the finest neighbors any bordering nation could possibly desire. The grace, character, dignity and integrity of the Canadian people are always on display no matter the circumstance, along with your unwavering support of the American people, especially when in time of need, has always been front and center in defining your North American Patriotism. Sept. 11, 2001 is a shining example, beyond and above!
We who reside in The Olympic Region of Lake Placid and Saranac Lake understand hospitality better than most, having hosted “The Winter Olympic Peace Games” twice over the past century. We pride ourselves in our hospitality and we hold its definition to a very high standard. We have a very clear understanding of the concept of a “global brotherhood” throughout the world (not just within the sporting community) and a very genuine respect for all others who are foreign competitors and citizens. We hold very close to our hearts the reality of competition, not just in terms of winning and losing, but in the standards in which we conduct ourselves when competing. And you, as Canadians, convey better than most, the understanding that in the grand scheme of things, displaying generosity, empathy, with class and kindness, are some of the most endearing attributes of any great champion, world leader or constituency of a great nation. Thus our problem, as Americans, is that we seem to have lost our way. America no longer conducts itself as a great nation, and “making it great again” as a sales promotion comes across as an arrogant, sad, sadistic joke to most within our borders.
In my opinion, and hopefully the opinion of other Americans, we can look to you Canadians for hope and guidance, for courage and for mentorship in the attempt to find our way back to the path towards the light, groping through the darkness, which is where we now stumble. I personally ask for both your aid and for your forgiveness, and I beg for your efforts to help us Americans become better global citizens.
Perhaps you may consider sharing some of that divine human spirit and northern pride that you Canadians seem to have an overabundance of. Quite frankly, most of our spirits are broken and many of us aren’t so proud any longer.
Observing America’s treatment towards you hurts our hearts, it bruises our soul, it’s hard to watch. Regardless, most like myself stand with Canada, by Canada and for Canada. I just thought writing you this note might make you feel better; I know it has for me. May God bless all North Americans, but in particular, our brothers and sisters holding the fort up top. Please stick with us. Like yourselves, we don’t give up until the goalie has been pulled, with the last shot on net! Let’s all pray for overtime …
