Fowler’s Crossing parking lots
To the editor:
This year, I’ve noticed a lack of concern for access to the paved parking lots adjacent to the Rail Trail at Fowler’s Crossing. The recent snowstorms have left more than a foot of snow on them. It’s virtually impossible to get in or out of them and maneuver around in them.
Consequently, they’ve been sitting there virtually unused for more than two weeks at this writing. I recall that they were cleared several times last winter and it was greatly appreciated as evidenced by the number of cars using them every day.
Last week, on Feb. 17, I went to the DEC in Ray Brook where I left a message about the lots with the receptionist. They wrote it down and mentioned that they would pass it on, which I’m sure they did. The next day, I went to the parking areas again. I used the “legacy” parking area (which was plowed for once) along with many other drivers, as there was no change in the paved lots. When I came back from using the trails a DEC employee was parked in a truck. I asked them why the other lots were not plowed. They said that the DEC will not plow them. Based on further discussion, it seems that no agency has clear “agency” concerning care of the parking lots when it comes to plowing. So, there they sit, inaccessible and unusable, for more than two weeks now. It seems to me that users of the Rail Trail, and the nearby ones, should have access to the paved parking lots in winter. Of course, that means plowing needs to be done when needed. I’m sure that someone can find a solution for locals and visitors alike. Many thanks.
