Are there still proofreaders?
To the editor:
I hesitated to write this letter because I was sure you’d be publishing a correction. However, it’s been a week and I haven’t seen anything. Is there such a thing as proofreading anymore or has it all been turned over to AI? For some time now I’ve noticed, on a more frequent basis, errors that would have been caught by a proofreader. This latest one was with a front page story (Jan. 25 to 26), so I thought it would draw some comment. Ironically, a story touting the success of a new reading curriculum at Lake Placid Elementary School is accompanied by a photo with a caption that makes no sense: “Chase U., a kindergartner at LPES this year, is spots school’s dog, Ries, on the first day of school, Sept. 5.” I thought of AI because while all the words are English, they do not appear to have been put together properly. I know it is a time consuming job, but I would like to think someone actually reads the paper before it goes to press.
