Holiday blues?

To the editor:

Dear neighbors,

Not everyone feels joyful in the holiday season.

Often at this time of year, we are surrounded by the sounds and sights of joy — family gatherings, parties and laughter. Yet many of us are reminded of those who are absent from our circle of family and friends, especially those who have died, whether recently or some time ago. Others among us may be coping with separation — like the deployment of a loved one who is serving our country, a relocation due to school or work, or even the end of a significant relationship. For others among us, we may be burdened by illness, depression or the chaos of our world.

When the holiday season leaves us feeling blue, it is important to remember that we are not alone. In care for those who need support and encouragement at the holidays, the First Presbyterian Church of Saranac Lake will host an ecumenical Service of the Longest Night on Wednesday, Dec. 11 at 6 p.m. Through scripture, music, prayer, the lighting of candles and silence, a safe space is forged for remembering, letting go and sharing hope.

The First Presbyterian Church of Saranac Lake is located at 57 Church St. Parking is available adjacent to the church. A time of hospitality will follow the service in the Great Hall. For more information, contact Rev. Joann White at 518-891-3401.

Peace and grace,
