Staycation ideas

I am not jealous of other people’s grand adventures — I really am not. I am excited for friends, strangers, and Internet influencers to experience places I will mark on a Google Maps Wish List.
Though I love seeing other people’s photos, being in the Adirondack during “mud season” gives me the opportunity to enjoy some quiet time while taking advantage of local activities and events. There isn’t space for me to list everything, but here are a few reminders of things to do for that staycation spring break.
Paul Smith’s VIC has various events (518-327-6241), such as an upcoming Arbor Day celebration, a visitor’s room, outdoor playground and trails. If you can’t get there, enjoy the Adirondack Rail Trail and other community trails, walks and hikes. Please be mindful of trail conditions during the change of seasons.
For art-related activities, visit Lake Placid Center for the Arts (518-523-2512), Saranac Lake’s BluSeed Studios (518-891-3799), Adirondack Center for Writing (518-354-1261) or local libraries.
Local libraries offer numerous activities: Lake Placid Public Library (518-523-3200), Saranac Lake Free Library (518-891-4190), Tupper Lake Public Library (518-359-9421), Wilmington E.M. Cooper Memorial Public Library (518-946-7701). Call each location for story times, events, activities, free museum passes and information for signing up for that free library card!
The Olympic Sites are a great way to learn local history. Check out the Lake Placid Olympic Ski Jump Complex Elevator (518-302-5919), Mount Van Hoevenberg’s climbing wall (518-523-2811), The Lake Placid Olympic Museum or Olympic Center Legacy tour (518-523-1655).
If you want to try climbing, here are some indoor climbing wall options: Willsboro’s The Crux at Pok-O-MacCready (518-963-7967), Mount Van Hoevenberg’s Climbing Center (518-523-2811).
For museums or activity centers, check out The Lake Placid Olympic Museum (518-523-1655), Adirondack Carousel (518-891-9521), Saranac Lake Laboratory Museum (518-891-4606), Charles Dickert Memorial Wildlife Museum (inside the Saranac Free Library), The Adirondack Center for Loon Conservation (518-354-8636) and Adirondack Fish Hatchery (518-891-3358).
Bowling centers are a fun inside activity: Tupper Lake’s Lakeview Lanes (518-359-2234), Saranac Lake’s Romano’s Saranac Lanes (518-891-8301) and Big Z’s Lake Placid Lanes (518-302-5245).
Here is a partial list of Easter egg hunts: April 17 at 10 a.m., Family Matters Easter Egg Hunt, Family Matters Resource Center, (bring a basket); April 10 at 10:30 a.m., Saranac Lake Free Library; April 10 at 11 a.m., High Peaks Church Easter Egg Hunt, Riverside Park, Saranac Lake; April 19 from 1 to 3 p.m., the Wilmington Youth Center is hosting free photos with the Easter bunny; April 20 at noon, Whiteface Easter Egg Hunt (weather and condition dependent).
These are a sampling of area activities and can provide great entertainment for all ages. The weather may be anything from mud to ice during an Adirondack spring. Consider it part of the challenge. Full disclosure: I won’t be here for the whole school break. I will go to a family wedding and deliver a van full of boxes I have stored for my sister. Both are obligations, but one involves cake, and the other allows me to clean out a storage unit. Yippee! Keep exploring!
