Visiting Monument Falls
Sometimes, I plan outings. I check the weather, choose the perfect hike, and get up early to avoid the crowds. Other times, I have to pull the car over and take a breather. Whether it’s kids crying in the car, leaf-peeping visitors driving in the middle of the road or I need a leg stretch, I am always grateful for those numerous spots that allow me a moment of peace before continuing my journey. I think it is my way to avoid road rage. Pulling out of a traffic jam isn’t always practical, but when you can, one favorite pull-over is Monument Falls between Lake Placid and Wilmington, located in the Wilmington Notch.
Located on Route 86, on the West Branch of the Ausable River, Monument Falls is more of a roadside attraction and angler destination than a hiking trail. Two large plaques are attached to boulders at the center of the parking lot, commemorating the 50th and 100th anniversary of “conservation in New York State.”
The first monument was constructed in 1935 to celebrate 50 years of establishing the Adirondack Park in May 1885 and erected the day before Roosevelt dedicated the Whiteface Memorial Highway. The second plaque commemorates the 100th anniversary of “establishing the forest preserve” for “the enjoyment of future generations.” It’s a gentle reminder for me that all the Adirondack trails, mountains, lakes and streams are here for everyone.
There are no marked trails, but distinct herd paths to the water. This area is a popular fishing spot with signs posted for anglers. The rest of us need to “leave no trace.” There are plenty of spots to walk along the river with places to stop to admire the view. I didn’t see any other person, which was the goal. I followed the herd path for about a quarter of a mile before returning to the parking lot.
The waterfall section of Monument Falls is a short walk to the east of the parking area. It’s about a five-foot-long rock slide located east of the parking area. The pathway abuts a section of Route 86. This trail is slightly rocky and unlevel, but worth the quick 130 yard walk to reach the falls. The pathway can be slippery, and this is not a swimming hole. I can’t stress that enough. The falls are just a spot to view and admire a section of the Ausable River. There are plenty of flat rocks to sit upon or rock-hop around. The water rushing over the rocks even drowns out the zoom of the passing cars from the road overhead.
Monument Falls is located about 8 miles from the bridge in Wilmington or 4.5 miles from the Sentinel Road/Route 86 intersection in Lake Placid. For me, Monument Falls is not a place to linger, but a roadside respite. Enjoy!
