This week we celebrated Indigenous Peoples’ Day! This holiday reminds us to honor the history of the Native American people who first inhabited this land and work to dispel the myths perpetuated to erase that important history. We also seek to support, celebrate and document the important contributions made by the Native members of our community, and their continued presence here. Today we’re highlighting the work of Jocelyn Teiekariios Jock, a Mohawk beadwork artist who lives in Bloomingdale. They learned beadwork from their grandfather and mother, who also taught them quillwork. Jock is one of two Native artists featured in our North Country Neighbors exhibit. Stop by and see their work anytime the museum is open. To learn more about the Native American history of our area, we recommend visiting the Six Nations Iroquois Cultural Center in Onchiota. This amazing collection, operated for generations by the Fadden Family, is a must-visit. Find out more by visiting their website: www.6nicc.com. (Provided photo — Historic Saranac Lake Collection.
