Raymond C. Bigelow

It is with sadness that we announce the death of Raymond C. Bigelow, age 89 on March 24, 2025. Ray was born on Oct. 16, 1935 in Lake Placid. He was the son of Phelps and Marguerite (O’Neil) Bigelow.

Ray was a familiar face around his beloved village of Lake Placid. As an active member of the community, he served many years on the Hall of Fame Committee, on the Watershed Group Committee and as a volunteer for the multitude of hockey tournaments played annually in Lake Placid. He was a player of all sports through his four years at St. Lawrence University, and especially was an avid hockey player. His team was inducted in the SLU Hall of Fame in 2011 for its accomplishments. After graduation, Ray enlisted in the Army and was lucky enough to be able to spend his tour of duty playing hockey for the U.S. 10th Special Forces Team in Germany. This allowed him to travel all over Europe. After his discharge, he played hockey and coached for an Austrian team. Ray later went on to work for Eastman Kodak as a Computer Systems Analyst for 30 years before retiring in Lake Placid.

He is survived by his two children, Scott C. Bigelow and Marguerite (Michael) Dormer, two grandchildren, Caroline Dormer (Ethan Buhl) and Jacob Dormer and a great-grandson. His surviving siblings are Carol (Robert) Brown, and Patricia (Neil) McKenna. Ray was predeceased by the following siblings: Shirley Jacques, Jean (Raymond) Roberts and Phelps “Jiggs” Bigelow Jr. and William Bigelow.

The family will be holding a private graveside service at a future date. Donations in his name may be made to the Pee Wee Hockey Association of Lake Placid. The M.B. Clark, Inc., Funeral Home in Lake Placid is in charge of arrangements. Please visit www.mbclarkfuneralhome.com.
