Harold Thomas ‘Tom’ Canning

Harold Thomas (Tom) Canning died on Thursday, Feb. 20, 2025, just nine days short of his 66th birthday in DeBary, Florida.
Tom was the son of Ingeborg Canning (ne Mayrle) and Donald Canning, and was born on March 1, 1959 in a U.S. Army hospital in Augsburg, Germany. His family moved to the U.S. in 1961, and during his childhood he lived in various small towns in New York, though he spent most of his formative years in Saranac Lake. He attended Saranac Lake Central High School, graduating in 1977.
Entering the U.S. Marine Corps in 1977, Tom served as an air-traffic controller in locations in North Carolina and California. He married Rosanne Buck during his time in the Marines, and after exiting the military, they moved their growing family to central Florida.
Tom loved the mountains and lakes of the Adirondacks and living there instilled a love for outdoor activities, particularly fishing. In Florida, he especially enjoyed getting out on the water, whether it happened to be one of the lakes around his home or the ocean. He also loved his pets, including Frankie his Chihuahua, Freida his Jack Russel Terrier, a love bird and a parakeet.
Tom is survived by his mother Ingeborg, sister Joanne Moorhead (Tom), brother Bob Canning (Anne), brother Donald Canning, and son Shawn French (Jeanine). He is also survived by his step- and half-siblings Bob Alrich and Barbara, Karen, Bonnie, Shawn and Tammy Canning. Tom is survived by his long-time companion Cheryl McNulty, and the children of his first marriage: Aaron Canning, Kara Canning and Michael Canning. He is survived by his grandchildren Ava, Leon and Mariah, and Heather, Seana, Gauge and Emma. There are also many cousins, nieces and nephews, and 10 great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his sons Raymond Suarez and Nicholas Canning and his father Donald Canning Sr.
