Alice M. DeMattos
Alice M. (Hunkins) DeMattos of Clearwater, Florida, passed away peacefully on Friday, Nov. 8 at the Tierra Pines Nursing home in Largo, Florida.
Alice was born on July 9, 1949, daughter of the late Lee and Verna Hunkins of Tupper Lake. She had one brother, the late Philip Hunkins of Massena.
Alice completed school in Tupper Lake and then went on to work at American Management Association in Saranac Lake, where she met and married her husband in 1968. She was a founding member of North Country Christian Center in 1978. She then went on to work at Cox Cable, the Adirondack Daily Enterprise, Mountain Pine Gift Shop, Adirondack Medical Center and North Country Community College.
In 2004 she and her husband, Jacques retired and moved to Clearwater, Florida. Here they made many new friends and went on several cruises.
In 2019 Alice was placed in a nursing home due to late-stage Alzheimer’s disease. Here she was a blessing to the staff and patients. She was best known for her singing every day.
Alice is survived by her husband, Jacques DeMattos; a son, J. David DeMattos and his wife Betsy of Shawano, Wisconsin; as well as a daughter, Amy (DeMattos) Thomas and her husband Ron of Floral City, Florida.
She had five grandchildren: Paige DeMattos, McKenna (DeMattos) Alverio and Jared DeMattos, all of Wisconsin, Alec Thomas of Texas and Christian Thomas of New York; and five great grandchildren: Jordyn, Jaxson, Conor, Addison and a baby boy on the way due in December.
A Celebration of Life will be scheduled in Saranac Lake the summer of 2025.
