Richard G. Maloney

Richard Gary Maloney, born April 24, 1942, in Ogdensburg, passed away on Oct. 16, 2024, surrounded by his wife and daughters. A 1960 graduate of Ogdensburg Free Academy, Dick went on to graduate in 1964 from Plattsburgh State University with a BS in education and then earned a Master’s in education from St. Lawrence University in 1966.

Dick was director of financial aid and associate dean at North Country Community College from 1970 to 1998. After retiring he took a temporary position with Paul Smiths College as director of financial aid. Dick was delighted to receive the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Professional Service for 1996-97.

Dick loved to ski. His college roommate, Danny McNamara, got him hooked and he continued to ski until he turned 80. He was a college ski team coach and directed three junior ski racing clinics. He was a member of Bill Schefer’s ski team at Whiteface. When there was no snow, Dick played tennis and golf. He loved to hike the Adirondacks and take photos.

But what Dick loved most was his family. If there was a party, count him in. His beautiful extended family gave him much to celebrate; a birthday, a game, a graduation, a holiday or just a day at the lake. Dick was always quick to dryly add a quip and break the ice with a quick smile. Dancing with Mary Ann would always bring a tear to his eye as he battled his cancer.

Dick was preceded in death by his parents, Timothy and Julia Maloney; his infant grandchild Ryan Rose; and his siblings, Judy Dionne, Dolores Strader, Tim Maloney and Joe Maloney.

His is survived by his loving wife, Mary Ann Dee; his children and step children, Michelle (Tom) Gladd, Kimberly (Chris) Rose, Shannon (John) Burns, Josh Dee, Justina Dee-Benware (Adam Benware); his grandchildren, Alec Gladd (Katie Lewis), Dylan Gladd (Katie Leyden), Samantha Gladd, Jillian Rose, Sean Rose, Molly Burns, Jack Burns, Maggie Burns, Cora Benware and Quinn Benware; and his former spouse Patricia Maloney.
