Irene Martin

Irene was born in Malone on March 2, 1923 to Joseph Pebler and Laura Leturno. As a teenager, she was a Tuberculosis patient at the Ray Brook State Hospital. On Aug. 8, 1943, she was united in marriage to the love of her life, Emery E. Martin. Emery predeceased her on Nov. 11, 1999.

For years, Irene added sparkle to the lives of residents of the Tri-Lakes region by working at the jewelry counter at Ames Department Store and then retiring from Saranac Lake Jewelry. If not at the jewelry counter, Irene could often be found at the casino, or bingo hall, taking her chances on a scratch off, or simply enjoying her family’s company.

Irene is survived by her sons Robert and his wife Maureen of Rochester; and David and his wife Therese of Saranac Lake. Additionally, she is survived by her grandchildren, Lynn, Steve, Michael and Amanda, as well as her great-grandchildren Eric, Kiara, Alexander, Andrew, Tyler, Danyeal, Caleem and Bella.

She was predeceased by her son Gary; her sisters Dorothy, Gladys, Elsie and Stella; her brother, Joseph; and a great-granddaughter, Makayla Elizabeth.

Funeral arrangements are in care of the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home, 20 Church St., Saranac Lake, NY 12983. Calling hours will be held on Saturday, June 8, 2024, 2 p.m. until 3 p.m. at the funeral home, a funeral service will immediately follow. Burial will immediately follow the funeral service at St. Bernard’s Cemetery in Saranac Lake, officiated by Father Thomas J. Higman.
