Leon Harvey

Leon W. “Junior” Harvey, 89, of Merrill, formerly of Saranac Lake, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2023 at his daughter and son-in-law’s home. He was born on Aug. 18, 1934, the son of Leon Sr. and Gertude (Gokey) Harvey.

Junior was a life long resident of Saranac Lake. He married his true love and help mate, the late Shirley (Gladd) Harvey on Sept. 13, 1958. Together they celebrated 33 wonderful years of marriage prior to her death on January 11, 1992.

Junior was employed by the New York State Department of Transportation for 41 years as a highway equipment operator, until his retirement in 1993. In his spare time he enjoyed puttering around his home, keeping his sidewalks painted and his lawn neatly trimmed every four days. He also helped his neighbors. His great joy were his many shiny new cars, which he kept spotless. He also instructed many local people, young and old, with learning to drive and pass their road tests. He was an avid dancer who loved being on the dance floor, including pair dancing on roller skates.

Junior will be fondly remembered as being a giving, kind and gentle soul who loved life and blessed those around him. He will be greatly missed.

Along with his wife, Junior was predeceased by his parents; his son, Paul Harvey; and a sister, Phyllis Haegler.

He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Kalma and Gregory Danussi; his grandchildren, Matthew and Heather Harvey, Kalee and Josh Johnston, and Antonio Danussi and his companion, Kayleigh Voos; his great grandchildren, Lane, Lucca and Leena Harvey and Nico Johnston; a sister, Judy Bibeau; a sister-in-law, Carol Gladd; as well as several cousins and many nieces and nephews.

There will be no calling hours at his request. A graveside service will be held at the convenience of the family and will be announced at a later date.

Memorial donations in Junior’s name may be made to Saranac Lake Fire Department and Volunteer Rescue Squad and Hospice of the North Country.
