Hannelore ‘Oma’ Micheels
Hannelore Micheels, age 90, of Saranac Lake and formerly of Germany, passed after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s on Jan. 27, 2023 at Elderwood nursing home.
Hannelore was born in Sandkrug, Germany, June 24, 1932.
She met her future husband, Wolfgang Micheels while working as a dental assistant. They were married Jan. 30, 1954 and moved to West Germany. Three years later they had a son.
During the mid-1960s, they immigrated to the United States and settled in New Jersey. Oma found work at a bookbindery. After her husband’s death she moved to Saranac Lake to be close to her son.
“Oma,” as she was so fondly referred to by everyone who knew her, loved her lovely home on Fox Run Road with the most amazing flower gardens, which she planted and tended to until the snows came each year. Oma loved her “grand dogs” and cared for them daily (they loved her too). She loved to pick wild blueberries in the summer and give most of them away. She always enjoyed a hot cup of coffee with her favorite sweets. Oma knitted sweaters and pants for the little teddy bears that High Peaks Hospice donated to their Hospice patients.
Hannelore was predeceased by her husband, Wolfgang Micheels, on Nov. 6, 1994. She is survived by her son Lutz W. Micheels (Marie VanNortwick) of Bloomingdale, and a granddaughter, Kelly E. Micheels of Kalispell, Montana.
Funeral arrangements are in care of the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home. A memorial gathering will be held in the Spring at the Brookside Cemetery, Bloomingdale. All family and friends of Oma are encouraged to attend and share a special favorite “Oma Story.” A notice for the burial will be published in the spring.
Family and friends who would like to remember Hannelore “Oma” Micheels may make a memorial donation to the Tri-Lakes Humane Society in care of the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home, 20 Church St., Saranac Lake, NY 12983 or you can plant flowers in her memory in the spring.
Family and friends can also share a memory, send a condolence and sign the online guest book at www.fortunekeoughfuneralhome.com.
