Janet Marie Smith

She was born Feb. 15, 1936 in Poughkeepsie to John and Margaret Cameron Smith.

Janet moved to Lake Placid in 1956, where she met Francis T. Wood, whom she married and they raised a family together. She later married John Hibbard and they enjoyed traveling and restoring homes in Vermont, New York and even a 200 year old cottage in Ireland.

Janet was a humble person who was talented in many ways. She wrote and illustrated a children’s book paired with “The Friendship Doll,” which was four dolls in one. The book, “We Are Different, We Are the Same,” was inspired by hosting the Fresh Air Fund children for several years. Sesame Street later adapted and produced the book with the message of looking beyond differences because we all have a heart.

After John’s passing she volunteered at “Go Fish” in Saranac Lake for many years.

She is survived by her children Jeffrey Francis, Lori Jean, Scott Francis, Erik Francis, and Ernest Francis. two grandchildren, Eben, Trevor, Erik Jr., and Tyler Wood, and three great-grandchildren, Luke Wood, Kennedy and Payton Wood.

As per Janet’s request, no funeral or memorial service will be held. Her children will spread her ashes in an area of the woodland she loved so much. Janet always enjoyed helping others.
