Anne C. Weld

Anne C. Weld, 98, passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 9 at Phelps Hospital, Sleepy Hollow.

Anne was the daughter of architect Walter H. Cassebeer and Kathryn Sabey Cassebeer, of Rochester.

Anne studied chemistry at Brown, and after marrying Philip B. Weld in 1951, worked as a laboratory technician for the Biology and Chemistry Departments at Philips Academy, Andover Massachusetts, where her husband taught.

While Anne raised two children, she also became deeply involved in community events at Andover, serving as a leader in such endeavors as the Handspring Craft Fair. She regarded her true home as the Adirondacks, where she and Phil spent summers, and after they retired, they came early and left when snow arrived. An avid canoer and more reluctant sailor, Anne loved being at the lake, After Phil’s death in 2005, she moved to Niskayuna.

Anne was a founding board member of the non-profit St Regis Foundation, was for many years the secretary-treasurer of the St Regis Property Owners Association. For approximately 30 years she was a trustee, officer and director of Adirondack Wild, chairing the Adirondack Research Library committee, hosting many formal and informal gatherings, and always working to raise awareness of the obligation to be an Adirondack lake student, steward and caretaker. Anne was last in the Adirondacks during the summer of 2018, where, at age 94, she expertly piloted her boat across the lake to camp.

Anne leaves behind two children Kathryn Weld (Sheldon Brown) and Daniel Weld (Margaret Rosenfeld) and five grandchildren: Nathaniel and William Brown; Adam, Galen and Mica Weld, as well as by many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service for those who knew her will be held by the family next summer. Memorial contributions in Anne’s name may be made to Adirondack Wild, (adirondackwild.org) The Adirondack Experience (theadkx.org) or the Wild Center (wildcenter.org).
