WILMINGTON — The Whiteface Mountain ski resort is rolling with the weather swings that spring presents as it plans its various festivities and operational schedules toward the end of the season.

The mountain is expected to close — just for the day — on Thursday as balmy temperatures and a soaking rain are forecasted then, according to an update provided by the state Olympic Regional Development Authority, which operates the ski center.

The update added that anyone who pre-purchased lift tickets for Thursday will be contacted by the ski center’s Guest Services to remedy the situation. Whiteface is currently slated to reopen Friday and remain open through Sunday, April 6, with ski lifts open to the public between 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. each of those days.

As of press time Monday evening, mountain officials said the daily schedule after April 6 will be determined later. Operations beyond this week are heavily dependent on weather conditions, which are difficult to pinpoint this far in advance. There is no official closing date for the season yet. The mountain did, however, note that April 6 would be the last day of operations for the season for its Bear Den area — a separate lodge and parking area that encompasses much of the mountain’s beginner-friendly terrain. It’s located about a quarter of a mile from the main Base area.

The mountain announced that its Pondskimming event, originally scheduled for Saturday, April 5, has been pushed back a week to April 12. All other facets of the annual tradition are slated to remain the same. These include participation being limited to the first 100 people to sign up — which must be done in-person at the Guest Service’s counter beginning at 8 a.m. that day. Sign-ups close at 11 a.m. if there are any spots remaining by that time.

The event is as much about style and flair as it is about making it across the water. Organizers encourage participants to show up in their most creative costumes. The event kicks off at noon. It takes place on the Round-a-Bout trail, near the mountain’s base area — with viewing opportunities along the course as well as from the Base Lodge’s Cloudspin Deck.

Whiteface is also planning to host the Apple Butter Open on April 13. The amateur bumps and jumps competition is slated to take place at the bottom of the Brookside trail — also near the mountain’s Base Lodge. Mountain officials emphasized that these event dates are still subject to change, as they are reliant on cooperative weather conditions. For the latest operational updates, visit whiteface.com/mountain.
