Sevey’s Corners at Route 56 and Route 3 won’t reopen until April
SOUTH COLTON — The state Department of Transportation has revised the construction schedule for the culvert replacement at Sevey’s Corners, where the southern terminus of Route 56 connects with Route 3.
On March 2, a sinkhole was discovered there, leading to an immediate road closure. Following an investigation, officials determined that replacing the culvert in the affected area was necessary to maintain the safety of motorists.
Since then, the state DOT said it has been working swiftly to design and construct a new concrete box culvert. Excavation efforts have been underway, but due to spring runoff and elevated water levels, the installation of the new, larger culvert has been rescheduled for the week of March 31.
“The Department remains committed to completing this project as quickly as possible and anticipates reopening the road in early spring. We appreciate the public’s patience and will continue to provide updates as new information becomes available,” DOT said in a news release.
There are three detours in place because of the closure.
If traveling south on Route 56 from Potsdam, take Route 72 east, then east on Route 11B, to east on Route 458, to south on Route 30, to west on Route 3, to the intersection of routes 3 and 56.
If traveling west on Route 3 toward Tupper Lake, take Route 30 north, to west on Route 458, to west on Route 11B.
If traveling north on Route 30 toward Tupper Lake, take Route 3 east, to north on Route 30, to west on Route 458, to west on Route 11B.
