Enterprise, Lake Placid News take home three NYPA awards
SARANAC LAKE — The Adirondack Daily Enterprise and the Lake Placid News received three awards from the 2024 New York Press Association’s Better Newspaper Contest, which were handed out during the NYPA Spring Conference in Saratoga Springs on Thursday and Friday, March 20 and 21.
Below are the awards with the judges’ comments.
¯ Coverage of Elections and Politics, all divisions, third place, Aaron Marbone, Adirondack Daily Enterprise. For stories on North Country Rep. Elise Stefanik’s nomination as President Donald Trump’s United Nations ambassador — and the forthcoming special election this will trigger — and on the results of a Saranac Lake village election being too close to call on election night last year, with all four candidates for two trustee seats having between 445 and 481 votes each.
The judges said: “Great reporting on a local lawmaker who achieved a very high national profile and appointment in the new administration. And the story on the close election, with a new clerk reluctant to release results, was delightful.”
¯ Best Small Space Ad, Division 1, first place, Carol Swirsky, Lake Placid News. For a gift-wrapped ad for Lake Placid outdoor clothing and equipment shop High Peaks Cyclery, advertising it as the “holiday headquarters” for winter adventures.
The judges said: “So clean!!! So appealing because of the cleanliness. Great Job!!!”
¯ Best Innovative Ad Project, all divisions, third place, Carol Swirsky, Adirondack Daily Enterprise. For a shamrock-coated ad for Lake Placid clothing store Irish Treasures, advertising its wool sweaters, Celtic jewelry and leather boots under the traditional Irish greetings “Cead mile failte” and “Slainte.”
The judges said: “Doing this in a ‘catalog’ form made it much more interesting and visually appealing. Great way for the advertiser to promote their products.”
