SARANAC LAKE — A pickup truck sunk into the slushy surface of Lake Colby near the boat launch on Thursday evening.
The driver was able to leave the truck safely, the truck’s tires were buried in the thick layer of slush on top of the ice, and the truck was towed off the lake the same evening.
“No ice is safe ice,” Saranac Lake Volunteer Fire Department Chief Michael Knapp said.
The truck had almost made it back to the boat launch, when it sank into deep slush just a couple yards off of shore. There appeared to be no clearance left under the truck’s body.
The one male driver was evaluated by the Saranac Lake Volunteer Rescue Squad. The State Police called in a tow truck to remove the pickup.
With the large amount of snow accumulating lately, it makes for significant slush, Knapp said.
SLVFD was called to the site at 5:39 p.m. and responded with two trucks and 16 members. They were back in service at 6:12 p.m.
The Lake Placid Snowmobile Club warned members about the ruts in the slush where the truck was stuck, saying it could cause damage or injury if hit with a sled, so club leaders urged caution in that area.
