Lake Placid school district to sell Shipman property

Partnership with youth center and school district will continue

LAKE PLACID — The Lake Placid Central School District is in the process of selling the property the Shipman Youth Center is built on to be in compliance with state law. However, LPCSD Superintendent Tim Seymour assures the public the district’s partnership with the youth center will continue.

On Tuesday, the school board unanimously approved a resolution to allow the district to sell the property. State education law mandates that school districts can only lease a property for a maximum of 10 years, with another 10 year extension. Seymour said during the meeting the district recently learned of this restriction, and since it has been 20 years since the property was originally leased to the youth center, the only viable option is to sell the property.

Seymour said Wednesday that the district has been in conversation with the Shipman Youth Center board for about a year. Most recently, they received a letter from the youth center board expressing an interest in buying the property.

“We’re in the situation in part because of the success of the relationship,” Seymour said Tuesday. “I can’t put myself in the shoes of those who were here before, but I’m sure 20 some-odd years ago, if people would have known that this service would be continuing, they would have been elated.”

Tuesday’s resolution declares the property is no longer of use to the district. This declaration is a legal requirement to be able to sell it. It also authorizes Seymour to take the necessary steps to sell the property. The youth center owns their building, so the sale only concerns the parcel of land the building is built on.

Starting at $4.75/week.
