ICE raid takes place in Tupper Lake
TUPPER LAKE — The United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency conducted at least one raid in Tupper Lake Tuesday morning.
Tupper Lake Village Police Chief Eric Proulx confirmed that at least one raid took place at the Tupper Lake Pine Mill, but did not know if any other locations were searched throughout the day, or how many individuals were detained. He said that the village police department was not involved in the raids.
“I was aware of the situation, and we did not have anything to do with it,” he said. “We didn’t even leave the station.”
The mill — formerly known as the Tupper Lake Hardwoods Inc. — is owned by the Quebec-based Matra Group, a lumber harvesting and distribution company. The mill was acquired by Matra in 2021 and saws pine before the logs are sent to the company’s other plants for further processing.
The Enterprise left messages with the U.S. Customs and Border Patrol’s Washington, D.C. office and Swanton, Vermont office — which is responsible for the North Country’s border corridor — but did not hear back by press time Wednesday evening. State Police Public Information Officer Trooper Brandi Ashley said she did not have any information regarding the raid to pass along as of press time.
This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
