Saranac Lake Civic Center to host Invictus Games curling training scrimmage

SARANAC LAKE — In collaboration with the Saranac Lake Civic Center, the Lake Placid Curling Club is has announced its volunteer support for the men and women of Team United States.

These wounded warriors will be participating in a training camp hosted by the Gary Sinise Foundation as they prepare for the upcoming 2025 Invictus Games in Whistler, British Columbia, set for February.

The public is invited to cheer on the athletes training in wheelchair curling during a scrimmage game on Tuesday, from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Saranac Lake Civic Center. The Lake Placid Curling Club, alongside USA Curling instructors, led by Marc DePerno, will provide expert guidance and facilities for the wheelchair curling segment of the winter sports training camp.

The overall training event will run from today until Friday. It serves approximately 50 athletes from across the U.S., representing all branches of the military. The Gary Sinise Foundation, in collaboration with the state Olympic Regional Development Authority, has recruited the help of local facilities and organizations to provide training opportunities in alpine skiing and snowboarding, nordic, biathlon, skeleton and wheelchair curling. The curling training, specifically, will be held today and Tuesday at the Saranac Lake Civic Center. It will host five U.S. veterans and military service members.

“Curling, a sport known for its camaraderie, sportsmanship, competition and strategy, reflects the spirit of the Invictus Games,” said Kimberly Weinrick, who serves as president of the Lake Placid Curling Club. “We are proud to help facilitate this training, honoring these incredible men and women, and we invite our community to join us in thanking them and cheering them on. Their participation in the Invictus Games is a profound symbol of resilience and community.”

The Invictus Games is an international Paralympic-style event that showcases the spirit of injured, wounded or sick armed services personnel and their undeniable will to overcome. The 2025 games will feature competitions across a variety of adaptive sports, including new winter sports disciplines.

The local community — including volunteers, fans and fellow athletes — is invited to support these inspiring competitors as they train and prepare for what games in Vancouver and Whistler.
