Double Jeopardy

Tri-Lakes get two mentions during ‘Jeopardy!’

SARANAC LAKE — The Tri-Lakes got not one, but two mentions in Wednesday’s episode of “Jeopardy!” with the Adirondack Regional Airport and the Miracle on Ice getting mentioned within minutes of each other as three brainiacs went head-to-head in the legendary television trivia game.

It was still early in the game when contestant Ferdinand Percentie took the category “Flying in state” for $800.

The answer needing to be responded to in the form of a question was read by host Ken Jennings: “JFK to SLK will take you to Saranac Lake, and the airport named for these upstate New York mountains.”

Percentie buzzed in, took a brief pause and asked “What are the Adirondacks?” picking up a quick $800 onto the $200 he already had.

Just a few answers and questions later, Percentie took the category “Sports by movie” for $1,000 and got the prompt “Based on a true story: 2004’s ‘Miracle.'”

This time, Lindsay Denninger buzzed in first and questioned correctly with “What is hockey?” to get on the board with $1,000.

In the first question, Adirondack Regional Airport was referred to by its International Air Transport Association airport code SLK, short for Saranac Lake.

Corey Hurwitch, who manages the Harrietstown-owned airport in Lake Clear, said it was exciting to see the national television shout-out. Town Councilwoman Tracey Schrader texted him about it Wednesday night and he’s had quite a few people texting him since.

“It’s cool to be mentioned,” Hurwitch said.

In the second question, the movie “Miracle” was mentioned. This movie is based on the “Miracle on Ice,” the U.S. Olympic hockey team’s historic win in the 1980 Winter Olympics, when the underdog team of mostly amateur collegiate players defeated the Soviet Union team 4-3 at the height of the Cold War between the two nations.

The rink where the game happened is owned by the state Olympic Regional Development Authority.

Chadd Cassidy, ORDA’s Vice President of Legacy Venues Operations and manager of the Olympic Center, said he woke up early on Thursday morning and learned about the “Jeopardy!” reference while watching Channel 5.

“It brought a big smile to my face,” Cassidy said. “The fact that after all these years — we’re going into the 45th anniversary — the relevance of what went on here, and the impact it had — not just nationally, but certainly to our region here — it’s nice to see that.”

“It’s one of those events that transcended sport,” Cassidy said, “because of the timing of it, the climate of the world in terms of the Cold War with the Russians. … You didn’t necessarily have to be a hockey fan to understand the relevance of the Miracle on Ice.”

“Jeopardy!” is a long-running quiz show that dates back to 1964.

The Adirondacks and Adirondack-related things come up quite often on the show. The “Jeopardy!” archive website j-archive.com has a search feature. Its records show that the word “Adirondacks” has been said on the show four times in the past year, including once when the real answer was “The Appalachians.”

Lake Placid has shown up numerous times in both questions and answers. Saranac Lake has shown up just a couple of times, once when the correct answer was about the lake, Lake Placid. Tupper Lake has been referenced on the show just once, in an answer about Lake Placid.

The archive shows contestants have hailed from Tupper Lake and North Creek throughout the years.

Starting at $4.75/week.
