Northern Lights Choir winter concert is Dec. 13

SARANAC LAKE — The Northern Lights Choir’s 10th annual winter concert will be held on Dec. 13 at 7:30 p.m. at St. Bernard’s Church in Saranac Lake.

Helen Demong, the choir’s founder and Artistic Director, has once again selected the musical repertoire, which spans multiple styles and genres. The evening’s program hopes to bring joy and awe to the audience with a mix of well-known favorites and eclectic, lesser-known pieces that all will enjoy.

One of the highlights of this season’s concert is an arrangement of “Ezekiel Saw de Wheel,” a classic spiritual that can only be performed with a tour de force of singers. Written and arranged by William Dawson and previously performed by esteemed artists, including Paul Robeson and Woody Guthrie, this piece aims to have you feeling the wheel’s turn as it culminates into 12 distinct vocal parts.

Some of the other featured pieces include:

“Ubi Caritas,” set to music by Norwegian Composer Ola Gjeilo. The lyrics in this piece translate to, “Where charity and love are, God is there” and “From a sincere heart, let us love one another.” This piece will bring peace to all who take its lyrics to heart.

An arrangement of Gordon Lightfoot’s “Song for a Winter’s Night” merges love and longing set before a warm fire on a snowy night. The song “Carol of the Bells” evokes the spirit of the approaching holiday season while asking us to remember that this is a Ukrainian Christmas Carol and to hold all those in harm’s way in our hearts. In contrast, the stunning French piece “Dirait-on” gently encourages us to self-reflect, embrace our true being, to accept and love ourselves.

With 80 members, the Northern Lights Choir is one of the largest choral ensembles in the North Country. The inclusion of several students from Paul Smiths College and North Country Community College makes it a truly multi-generational ensemble that produces a melodic kaleidoscope of songs.
