Hiker dies over weekend near Lake George

DRESDEN — A missing hiker was found deceased Saturday evening on Black Mountain, near Lake George. Authorities suspect the death was the result of a fall, according to WTEN, an ABC-affiliated Albany station.

They report that the hiker was pronounced dead on the scene as a result of injuries sustained from falling off of a ledge on the mountain. The hiker’s body was transported to the Glens Falls hospital for an autopsy.

The state Department of Environmental Conservation said seven forest rangers assisted with the search for the missing hiker. The DEC said the death — as of 12:30 p.m. Monday — remained under investigation and more information would be provided “as appropriate.”

Authorities have not released the name or age of the deceased individual but said that they were from Castleton, Vermont — about 25 miles east of the mountain — and that their vehicle was found at the trailhead.

Black Mountain is a popular hike near Lake George’s eastern shore due in part to its expansive views of the lake and surrounding areas. With an elevation of 2,665 feet, the mountain is the tallest peak rising up from Lake George’s shores. Its summit has a fire tower, but it is fenced off to the public, as it is now used to support communications equipment.

While it is unclear exactly where a fall may have occurred, there are several ledges near the mountain’s summit. Several people who had hiked it at other points over the weekend reported on Facebook that there was a combination of snow and ice at the mountain’s summit. It is unclear what hiking gear the deceased individual was using at the time.

Attempts at reaching investigators with the Washington County Sheriff’s office — who is leading the investigation — were unsuccessful as of press time Monday evening. This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
