12 days in one window
Local artist’s annual Christmas painting now on display on Lake Street
SARANAC LAKE — For 38 years now, Kathy Ford has turned her front picture window at her home on the west end of Lake Street, near the intersection with Petrova Avenue, into a bright and colorful canvas for her art.
This year, the painting is of the song “The 12 Days of Christmas.”
The 12 days of Christmas start on Christmas Day, the symbolic day for when Jesus was born, to the Epiphany, when the three Magi wise men visited the newborn.
Ford has always wanted to do the 12 days of Christmas. After she switched to painting on three plexiglass sheets instead of directly on the window, which cracked several times, the format worked perfectly for the theme.
The painting took 56 hours of work and Ford only started on it after Thanksgiving. Her philosophy is to let one holiday end before starting on the next one. But Thanksgiving came late this year, so she was on a time crunch before getting it installed last weekend.
Of the dozen panels, some are based on reference pieces, and some she designed herself.
“If it brings a smile to people’s faces, I’m happy. If it makes them start humming the song after they leave, even better,” Ford said.
Ford said viewers can feel free to pull through the half-circle driveway in front of their house to get a closer look at the detailed painting. She wants people to enjoy it.
