Loon center’s ‘Loon Zoom’ presentations start next week

SARANAC LAKE — The Adirondack Center for Loon Conservation is once again providing monthly online “Loon Zoom” presentations about loon research, conservation and ecology and featuring guest speakers from around the country.

Loon Zoom presentations will be offered at 7 p.m. on the second Thursday of the month from November to April and will feature guest speakers who work with loon populations. The first of the series will be on Thursday, Nov. 14, from 7 to 8 p.m.

The online presentation will feature ACLC’s executive director Dr. Nina Schoch and long-time ACLC field staff member and retired forest ranger Gary Lee. Together they will share stories from their decades of experience rescuing and recovering loons in distress throughout the Adirondack Park. They will share insights into many of the human impacts that affect loons as well as observations on the status of the Park’s loon population.

Other presentations will include:

¯ Dec. 12: “Common Loon Monitoring in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem Through Bioacoustics: BRI Wildlife” with biologist Carl Brown. He will discuss his bioacoustics research in monitoring the small population of common loons in Wyoming.

¯ Jan. 9, 2025: “Loon Rehabilitation: The Ticking Time Bomb” with Andrea-Howey-Newcomb of Tri-State Bird Rescue and Research, Inc. who will introduce viewers to the work of rehabilitating loons and discuss why loon rehabilitation is more complex than for other species.

¯ Feb. 13, 2025: “Our Favorite Loon Stories: Tales from 40 Years of Researching Washington’s Common Loons” with Daniel and Virginia Poleschook, adjunct scientists at BRI, who will share information gleaned from 30 seasons of monitoring Washington State’s Common Loons.

¯ March 13, 2025: “Luring Anglers with Lead-Free Tackle” with Margie Manthey, a New York-native who serves as the Fishing Director for Wolfe Lake Association in Ontario, Canada. She is an avid angler who has become a passionate loon conservationist, tackling the problem of lead poisoning in loons from lead fishing tackle. Manthey will discuss how lead impacts loons and other wildlife, and her work to encourage anglers to make the switch to lead-free tackle.

¯ April 10, 2025: “Review & Preview: A Look Back at 2024 and Ahead at 2025” with ACLC’s own research biologist, Griffin Archambault, who will provide a review of the ACLC’s work during the 2024 field season, as well as a look ahead at 2025’s research, management, and education programs.
