Housing units, wedding venue, arcade planned for Lake Placid

LAKE PLACID — The North Elba/Lake Placid Planning Review Board reviewed a sketch plan for a new residential building project near Hannaford at a meeting on Wednesday.

The project has been proposed for 44 Hadjis Way, a small lot next to the supermarket. The building on the lot was the location of the marketing agency, Workshop and the new owner of the property is Neven Manojlovic, who answered questions about the sketch plan over Zoom during the meeting. The proposed project would have the same footprint as the current commercial building and would be remodeled inside to fit six residential units, according to Manojlovic’s application.

Manojlovic did not specify whether the building would be a short-term or long-term rental. The sketch plan is pending approval as the board waits for more information on a landscaping and parking plan.

Manojlovic owns two other properties in North Elba and Lake Placid, according to Essex County property records. One is the Downhill Lodge Condominium at 6143 Sentinel Road, which has units listed on numerous rental websites. The other is a VRBO located near Whiteface Lodge.

New wedding venue comes to town

At Wednesday’s meeting, the board also held a public hearing and a sign review for an event venue located at McKenzie Wilderness Estate, which is located off state Route 86 across from the Saranac Lake Golf Club. The venue will be called “The Chalet at the McKenzie Wilderness Estate” and will mainly cater to weddings, according to the commercial use application.

The venue, which will include three temporary tents and a portable restroom trailer, will be available for rental seasonally, several days a week from April through October. A neighbor attended the meeting to express support for the project, and it was approved by the board with cheers from the public seating area. The project will need to be approved by the Adirondack Park Agency before it moves forward.

The Penalty Box moves forward

Kristeen Colby, a local resident who plans to open a hockey-themed arcade and restaurant called The Penalty Box at 2663 Main St. in Lake Placid, was overcome with emotion when the board approved her project on Wednesday. Colby’s young daughters joined the meeting on Zoom from the car after soccer practice to cheer her on.

The plan for the arcade, detailed in Colby’s application, is to redecorate the inside of the building, which is currently home to Mito Japanese Steakhouse. The arcade will serve food and hockey-themed drinks.

Starting at $4.75/week.
