Sinfonietta show on Sunday to feature Mahler
LAKE PLACID — The Lake Placid Sinfonietta will feature Mahler’s “Symphony No. 5” during its performance at the Lake Placid Center for the Arts on Sunday.
Written in 1901-02 by the Austro-Bohemian romanic composer, the symphony opens with a trumpet solo, features a funeral march and spans five movements.
The concert starts at 7:30 p.m. in the center’s auditorium with Stuart Malina conducting.
The program starts with “Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 5,” interpreted by Sir Simon Rattle. Mahler’s 5th is strictly instrumental and follows a largely conventional symphonic shape. Rattle has been the conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic and interpreted many of Mahler’s works.

The Lake Placid Sinfonietta’s weekly free concert is at 7 p.m. Wednesday in Mid’s Park, Lake Placid, with “Slavic Sensations” as the theme as part of Sinfonietta Festival 24.
The concert is free to all. In the event of rain or temperatures below 65, the concert will be moved to the sanctuary of St. Agnes Church on Saranac Avenue in Lake Placid. Rain site concerts will begin at 7:15 p.m.
