Roman holiday: Rip-roaring weekend closes Winter Carnival

SARANAC LAKE — The weather was warmer the second week of Winter Carnival — too warm for the Ice Palace on some days — but the Colosseum remained standing and the village was buzzing with countless events

The Rotary Show returned on Friday for the first time in three years due to the coronavirus pandemic, and there was a packed house at the Harrietstown Town Hall to see it. Dozens of musicians, dancers and performers took the stage before the Rotary Dancers closed out the show with a raucous chorus line, kicking each other’s centurion helmets off, falling all over and loosely lip-synching the lyrics to “New York, New York.”

The Gala Parade on Saturday brought in more than 40 groups of costumed marchers, dancers and drummers on a sunny afternoon. Riding on chariots, getting soaked in paint or waving canoe paddles, performers filled the roads with noise, candy, glitter and gunsmoke.

The Dance Sanctuary, Bluseed Studios and ADK ArtRise won the Louis Fobare prize for best in show for their dance troupe.

The Kiddie Parade on Sunday brought more noise to Main Street as children toddled down the road to dance music, ran up to hug mascots and rode on their parents’ backs.

The Carnival Cringe Comedy night at the Garagery packed the space to the rafters on Thursday as five local comedians took turns coaxing out smiles and bringing out belly laughs with one-liners, magic and Carnival-related comedy.

There were too many events to list — book fairs, races, tournaments, plays, receptions, torchlight skiing, music, music, music.

There was live music at nearly every bar in Saranac Lake, with local bands, Saranac Lake favorites and regional rockers bringing down the house all over town.

On Sunday night the festivities closed at the Ice Palace with fireworks and a slide show showing pictures of all the events.
